Natalia GONTCHAROVA (1881–1962) - Lot 23
Natalia GONTCHAROVA (1881–1962) Eight illustrations for Alexander Rubakin’s poetry collection, *The City*. Paris, 1920. Eight lithographs mounted on a single sheet. 44 x 54 cm. The artist’s lithographed monogram appears beneath each illustration. The original edition of the book was published in 1920 (Paris, Chez l’auteur) with 58 compositions by Natalia Goncharova, including 9 full-page illustrations outside the text, reproduced on the lithographed text. The book had a print run of 325 copies. Natalia Goncharova was born in 1881 into a family of the Russian minor nobility and spent her childhood in the countryside. She left Russia for good in 1915 and eventually settled in Paris with her husband, the painter M. Larionov. In the 1920s, she was one of the leading painters for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and notably designed the sets for Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. This print illustrates both the artist’s taste for Russian folk art, particularly icons and lubki, as well as the influence of Rayonism, a movement founded and led by Goncharova and her husband in 1913, a Russian variation on European Cubism and Italian Futurism
