Ivan CHOULTSE (1874-1939) [RUSSIA/FRANCE] - Lot 7
Ivan CHOULTSE (1874-1939) [RUSSIA/FRANCE] Moonlight at Cap d'Antibes, 1922 Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. 64 x 53 cm Provenance : -Acquired in 1923 at one of the Shulze exhibitions. -Remained in the family until today. Our picture was probably painted under the influence of one of the painter's masters, Arkhip Kouïndji, one of the promoters of the renewal of landscape painting in Russia in the second half of the 19th century. A lyrical-poetic approach to nature, in which light and Russian space play a major role. This movement, independent of European Impressionist influences, was described by some as Russian Luminism. Twilight backlight, bluish cloud halo, sheet of flames on the sea, charred vegetation - under Choultsé's brush, nature is no longer permanence, but phosphorescence. It takes on a cosmic, almost metaphysical dimension. Lot presented in collaboration with Artexpertise.fr
