PRADES, Jean-Martin de (1724-1782), French churchman, theolo - Lot 131
PRADES, Jean-Martin de (1724-1782), French churchman, theologian and encyclopedist. He became reader to Frederick II of Prussia. L.A.S. Zeidelitz, "quartier du Roi", November 5, 1756. 2 pp. in-4. Second leaf almost detached. Transcript attached. Interesting letter concerning the start of the Seven Years' War, traditionally dated August 29, 1756, the day Frederick II attacked Saxony. The Abbé de Prades attempts to justify the attack as "warmly welcomed in France". "It is, however, quite astonishing that it was not expected, for I cannot persuade myself that the Ministry of Versailles was unaware that the Court of Dresden, in the person of the Count of Brul, was the King's mortal enemy [...]". "[......] all these reasons would undoubtedly suffice to justify the King, but he had even stronger ones, he had in hand unequivocal proof of the ill will of the Saxons towards him [...] would you ever have expected that one would be distressed in France by the victories won over the House of Autrice. Meanwhile, the Saxon army has become Prussian. We would be obliged to sing the Te Deum en cachete as the Huguenots pray [...]".
