BROWN SEQUARD, Edouard (1817-1894). Set of 6 L.A.S., mostly - Lot 280
BROWN SEQUARD, Edouard (1817-1894). Set of 6 L.A.S., mostly addressed to his "Master", [Pierre Rayer (1793-1867), famous anatomo-pathologist, physiologist and dermatologist, founder of the biology society and physician of Louis-Philippe and then of Napoleon III]. 8 pp. of various sizes. About a memoir demonstrating that the "fibers of the intestine are spiral and not annular as is ordinarily supposed" by G. Cole and a memoir by Drake "to show how much respiration acts on the movement of the heart"; "Your question with regard to the practitioners of Paris who know me as a physician, found me mute because of the embarrassment of choosing names. I believe that almost all your colleagues in the faculty are aware of my true situation. Among those who know it best, after Mrs. G. Sée, Jaccoud and Charcot, I can name Mrs. Guyon, Verneuil, Potain, Ball, Fournier, Fouchard and also Mr. Gosselin. If you cast your eyes on my record you will soon know that my works in medicine are more numerous than those in physiology. The value of the progress I have made in pathogenesis and therapeutics is almost as great as that of my research in physiology. Enclosed you will find a list of the books I have published, showing that they are mainly concerned with medicine [...]". (April 14, 1886); "You have offered to give me some patients to treat. I must tell you that I cannot benefit from your good will in this respect. For more than three years that I have been a doctor, I have completely neglected the study of diseases from a practical point of view and I am unable to practice medicine. I have occupied myself exclusively with science, forgetting that my work was pecuniarily sterile and that I was approaching every day the abyss on the edge of which I now stand [...]". He details the misery of his daily life and submits his work for candidacy for the prize of medicine and surgery (March 20, 1849); Nice application letter for the prize of Physiology. Brown Sequard wrote the text that Rayer would have to recite in order to convince: "I believe the work of Mr. B.-S. to be perfectly worthy of the prize. This work contains new facts and unanswerable demonstrations concerning physiological doctrines of the greatest importance [...]" (S.l.n.d.), etc.
