Félix VARLA (1903-1986) - Lot 66
Félix VARLA (1903-1986) Market scene in the Caucasus Oil on canvas, signed lower left. 50 x 73 cm (Canvas distended and numerous cracks) After studying science, Varla entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Tbilisi. At the end of his studies in 1926, he opened a private art school in the Georgian capital before leaving for France and Argentina to continue his training. Felix Varla developed a very particular style, marked by both Dutch pictorial aesthetics and the iconography of the Persian miniature and imbued with the Byzantine tradition of iconographers. Here, the theme of the Bazaar, typically Caucasian, is represented in a harmonious and dynamic composition featuring merchants and craftsmen in the foreground in a mountainous landscape of the Terek Valley, featuring the Trinity Church of Guergueti on the left side of the canvas.
