Virgin and Saint John of Calvary in ivory carved in the roun - Lot 172
Virgin and Saint John of Calvary in ivory carved in the round. The Virgin, standing with her arms crossed over her chest, looks up to the right; she is dressed in a long robe, a wimple and a veil, the sides of which she holds with her two hands; St. John, in a slight contrapposto, turns his head to the left, his two joined hands deported to the right; his face, marked by affliction, with fine moustache and goatee, is framed by an abundance of wavy hair Germany, attributed to Justus Glesker (ca. 1610/15, Hamelin - 1678, Frankfurt), third third of the 17th century Heights: 21.4 cm and 22.5 cm Blackened wooden bases Gross weight: 818g and 868g (cracks and very slight accidents) Justus Glesker, from a family of sculptors, travelled in Italy and the Netherlands before settling in Frankfurt in 1646. He was the author of the large wooden sculptures of the Crucifixion in Bamberg Cathedral, but it is also known that he worked in ivory, as is attested by his death inventory, which mentions statuettes in this material. Thus, a Madonna and a St. John of Calvary, preserved today in Modena at the Galleria Estense (Inv.n.8325 and 8326), very comparable to these, are attributed to him. The wet draperies that follow the body of each figure, falling to their feet in a similar manner, and the intertwined fingers of John, with their great mastery of execution, can be seen.
