As soon as the car was presented, our owner ordered his 328i Cabriolet from Auvergne Auto, a BMW dealership in Aurillac in the Cantal region of France. It's a 1996 model year in Cosmos Schwarz metallic, with Montana beige leather and a black electric soft top matching the body color. Metallic paint is optional, as are body-colored hard-top, headlamp washers and extended burr-walnut veneers, very rare on an E36 phase 1. A BMW accessory, windscreen netting to reduce aerodynamic turbulence is also ordered. New price: 293,500 francs. Our example was registered on September 29, 1995, and still retains its original Parisian BMW dealership registration. Chic! The 328i is distinguished by its chromed twin tailpipes. As standard, it features automatic air conditioning, a leather sports steering wheel and all the passive safety features, from ABS and adjustable steering column to dual airbags, belt tensioner integrated into the belt buckle and active rollover protection hidden in the rear headrests. The soft top is lined and electro-mechanically operated. Specific to the first 328i models, the 7 x 15 alloy wheels are fitted with 205/60 VR15 tires, for maximum driving comfort. On request, the 3 Series cabriolet can be transformed into a coupé by fitting a hard-top. This second roof is a self-supporting structure made entirely of aluminum and weighs just 29 kg. Painted in the same color as the body, the hard-top forms an elegant whole that lends an original touch to the open-top cabriolet, setting it apart from the 3 Series Coupé. Installation is a breeze: at the front, it's attached by a central knob (like the folding soft top), and at the rear, two bayonet fasteners, each with a handle, secure the hard-top to the body. Our model also features a winch, sold by BMW at the time, for hanging the hard-top in the garage. As is often the case with BMWs, the 3 Series E36 went through a desert period, and the beautiful models were massacred by customers who were not scrupulous about preserving them... and then often disappeared. In 2026, to come across a first-hand 328i manual gearbox in such condition, with just over 100,000 km and a desirable configuration, is a rare phenomenon!
