VILLIERS DE L'ISLE-ADAM, Auguste, Count of (1838-1889). Set - Lot 220
VILLIERS DE L'ISLE-ADAM, Auguste, Count of (1838-1889). Set of 2 documents: -L.A.S. to the director of the newspaper Gil Blas, Eloi Dubuisson. Paris, August 1, 1888. 2 pp. in-8. Header printed Gil Blas. Long and interesting letter of Villiers de l'Isle Adam, aged. He defends himself from a false trial which is made to him about a news entitled the Secular Esteem. This text will be the first of the collection Nouveaux contes cruels published later that year under the title Les Amies de pension. "Mr. Guérin has just addressed me a most strange reproach: affirming to me, on hearsay that I do not know, that my chronicle of last Sunday had already appeared in Gil Blas under another title than that of the Lay Esteem! [...]. I am absolutely incapable of such a thing which would be a serious indelicacy [...]. What is possible is that having given the manuscript to [Catulle] Mendès three months ago, he passed it on in a weekly booklet with such an insignificant print run that it can really only be considered as a proof (500 copies, 300 of which were returned) and entitled La Vie pour rire [...] My God, I'm not going to give it to anyone. [...] My God, in front of the enormous publicity of the Gil Blas, in truth I did not believe I had to deprive my readers of a short story which is among all mine, amusing and which moreover obtained a great success there; this is said with about twenty letters in support that I can show... it was buried, I resuscitated it thanks to your newspaper, and here is all my crime [...] ". -Autograph letter signed by Villiers de l'Isle Adam, addressed to Brunetière on the false title of the collection Tribulat Bonhomet.
