MARLES, Jean de. - Lot 82
MARLES, Jean de.
Paris: Past and Present, A History of France Divided into Twelve Periods Applied to the Twelve Arrondissements of Paris, and Illustrated by the Monuments of This Famous City.
Brussels, Société Encyclographique, 1839.
3 volumes of text bound in 1 thick in-4 volume of 500–531–552 pp. and an in-4 atlas of 276 black-and-white plates in serpentine binding. Contemporary blue half-chagrin with corners; smooth spine decorated in the Romantic style with gilt ironwork (spine and covers slightly faded, lower text joint split, edges, caps, and corners rubbed, foxing).
The atlas consists of a title page and 276 black aquatint-engraved plates, numbered 1 through 271, with 10 “bis” plates, two plates bearing the number 71, and 5 plates, each containing two separately numbered figures.
A rare, very complete copy of the atlas.
Its appeal lies in the delicate aquatint illustrations depicting Parisian life.
A beautiful copy.
