DENON, Dominique-Vivant. [DAVID]. A collection of 8 colored costume plates... (Paris, ca. 1800–1850). Eight black etchings in in-8 format (16.4 x 10.5 cm at the edge) watercolored with gold highlights, in a green marbled paper slipcase with the publisher’s flap and a printed label bearing the title and print run on the front cover. A fine copy. A collection of eight costume plates designed by Vivant Denon, etched in black and watercolored, some with gold highlights. Costume designs for representatives of the people commissioned by the Committee of Public Safety in 1794. The painter David created the preparatory studies, which were executed, engraved, and printed by Denon. Full-length portraits, dressed in civilian and military attire, depicted alone or with a few elements of scenery. These uniforms were ultimately never adopted. 19th-century print, limited to 100 copies; this one is no. 45.
