[16th-century MANUSCRIPT]. [HOSPITALLERS OF SAINT JOHN. ORDE - Lot 4
[16th-century MANUSCRIPT]. [HOSPITALLERS OF SAINT JOHN. ORDER OF MALTA].
[Notarial Minutes and Notes for the Diocese of Sarlat]
(ca. 1500–1570)
Large quarto. (280) folios (including 89, 127, 139–143, 181, and 262 blank pages). Soft-sewn reused vellum binding with flaps; brown ink writing, possibly from the 15th century, visible on the reverse side of the binding (vellum tarnished and soiled, slightly shrunken with small losses; quires slightly out of order; worn page edges, occasionally gnawed corners, traces of water damage or stains on a few quires, small lateral text losses on the first two folios, one small detached quire but no loss of text overall).
An important 16th-century notarial manuscript from the Périgord Noir region, written in Latin and Latin Farsi in brown ink by multiple scribes.
Approximately 30 to 50 lines per folio with a margin left on the left. There are several fairly elaborate handwritten signatures, including Maltese crosses, as well as several Maltese crosses drawn in ink in the margins. A few roughly calligraphic initials.
At times, there are numerous annotations in the margins to the left of the text. There are crossed-out sections, corrections, and line erasures.
ecclesiastical documents
the “Confraternity of the Holy Spirit of Saliniac” (Salignac, in the Dordogne), the Raymond and Pierre de Frayssinet families, and a text written in a mixed language (Latin-Occitan)
It appears that the documents were compiled into the notebooks at a later date on vellum, as they do not always follow a chronological order. They were likely “numbered” at that time using a consecutive folio numbering system in Roman capital letters, which appears in the upper left corner of the folios. The document may be part of a series, as the numbering begins on the first folio at CCC and ends at CCCCXL.
wills or confessions
sometimes numerous annotations in the margins left blank to the left of the text
