Jean SERRIERE (1893–1968) - Lot 11
Jean SERRIERE (1893–1968) Hammered copper vase with a relief decoration of grapevines in silver-plated metal Signed with the artist’s initials “J.S.” and the foundry mark A. Hébrard Paris Circa 1925 H: 21.5 cm Trained as a painter, Jean Serrière turned to copperwork after World War I. He regularly exhibited his creations at the A. A. Hébrard gallery, which helped bring his work to the public’s attention. At the intersection of goldsmithing and sculpture, copperwork allowed him to explore the sculptural possibilities of metal, hammered to reveal its material qualities and relief. This remarkable vase, decorated with vine leaves and grape clusters, exemplifies this artistic exploration. The relief of the grape clusters, accentuated by the hammering and the sheen of the silver-plated metal, creates a subtle interplay between materials, textures, and light. This work exemplifies the refinement of French copperwork from the 1920s.
