Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 442
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1921 Darracq V8 Gouache on card stock 27.5 x 44 cm (traces of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “A pale imitation of the famous Darracq V8 built for drag racing at the end of the last century, the production VS model, manufactured after World War I, made—like many other hastily developed luxury cars of that era—a brief one-year appearance. It was considered unwieldy and fuel-hungry. The transmission had four speeds, and the rear axle was a worm gear type. The 4,584 emª (75 x 130 mm) side-valve engine produced 62 CV. Its top speed was estimated at around 105 km/h. This magnificent bodywork stands in stark contrast to some of the monstrosities of the same era. The hood was made of polished aluminum, the fenders were streamlined, and wooden slats protected the gas tank from flying stones.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 85.
