Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 439
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Hotchkiss 40/50-liter, 1908 Gouache on card stock 24 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “This magnificent two-seater touring sedan, built by Paul Audineau, was a relative rarity in 1908 because the front compartment was completely enclosed, just like the rear one. Harmonizing with the double-curved roof, the body panels were ‘wasp-waisted.’ The bore and stroke (120 x 140 mm) of its powerful 9.5-liter Hotchkiss six-cylinder engine were identical to those of the Mercedes shown below. It was, moreover, constructed in the same manner, with cylinders cast in pairs, featuring side valves controlled by two camshafts housed within the block (I-shaped cylinder head). The transmission had four speeds, and the clutch was a cone clutch. The sophistication of its drivetrain lay in a direct drive via the clutch, with dog clutches engaging automatically when, in the highest gear, the clutch pedal was fully released. Torque was transmitted to the rear axle via a driveshaft housed within a push rod tube—in fact, the famous Hotchkiss transmission.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 53.
