Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 438
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1908 Mercedes 70cv Gouache on card stock 27 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “Introduced in 1906, this massive touring car was the first production Mercedes equipped with a six-cylinder engine. A bore and stroke of 120 x 140 mm gave it a displacement of 9.5 liters. Cast in pairs, with a non-removable T-shaped cylinder head, the cylinders had side valves controlled by separate camshafts for intake and exhaust. A spiral clutch transmitted the torque from this 70 CV engine to the rear axle via a four-speed transmission. Bolstered by resounding victories in competition, Mercedes cars were already regarded worldwide as the benchmark in automotive engineering. The enormous touring car depicted here had a body designed to offer comfort rivaling that of a luxurious Pullman express—except for the driver, who had to brave the elements.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 53.
