Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 437
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8 A Spinto 1927 Gouache on card stock 20 x 46 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “The beauty of the interwar Isotta Fraschini was never equaled, and this splendid chassis inspired some of the most elegant bodywork ever seen. Movie stars, boxing champions, and even the pope couldn’t resist it. But despite the extravagant perfection of its mechanics, it was never an exceptional car in terms of performance. Until the introduction of the 1934 Model 8B, the large inline-eight engine, designed by Cattaneo, always lacked power, and the Isotta was considered as cumbersome to handle as a truck. From its launch in 1919 through 1924, the displacement was barely 6 liters, but with the release of the Tipo 8 A model in 1925, it was increased to 7,372 em (95 x 130 mm), and power rose from 80 to 120 CV. at 2,400 rpm. The Tipo Spinto (the subject of this document), with a short chassis and bodywork by Castagna of Milan, had two carburetors and produced 135 CV at 2,600 rpm; later, the 8 B produced approximately 160 CV. The overhead valves were operated by rocker arms. The crankshaft rested on nine bearings. The drivetrain included a multi-disc clutch, a three-speed transmission with widely spaced gears, and a driveshaft housed within a push rod tube. Isotta-Fraschini was among the pioneers of four-wheel braking; the 8 A even featured vacuum-assisted brakes.” Bibliography: P.
