Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 436
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1935 Riley Ulster Imp Gouache on card stock 24.5 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “It was in a car of this type that world champion Mike Hawthorn made his competitive debut in 1950 and 1951. The Imp was equipped with the Nine’s four-cylinder engine (60.3 x 95.2 mm, 1,089 cm³) featuring a high-mounted dual overhead camshaft and hemispherical combustion chambers. The production Sport version produced 40 CV, and its top speed barely exceeded 110 km/h. The factory race car (shown here with its latest modifications) was more powerful; the Ulster Sprite (1.5-liter), which was derived from it, had even more horsepower under the hood. It was equipped with a standard four-speed close-ratio transmission and cable-operated brakes.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 177.
