Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 435
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Triumph Southern Cross 1.2- and 2-liter, 1935 Gouache on card stock 20 x 35 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “Under the influence of Donald Healey, Triumph made a name for itself in rallies and other races in 1935. The Southern Cross sports car was available with a choice of two engines, built by Coventry-Climax, featuring overhead intake valves and side exhaust valves—a configuration the British refer to as ‘I.O.E.’ (Inlet over Exhaust) and found in several manufacturers’ models, notably Rolls-Royce and Rover. One was a 2-liter six-cylinder (65 x 100 mm, 1,991 cm³), the other a 1.2-liter four-cylinder (66 x 90 mm, 1,232 cm³). The chassis specifications were standard for the era, featuring rigid axles and semi-elliptical leaf spring suspension, a four-speed manual transmission, and an exposed driveshaft. A massive separate fuel tank, additional mudguards, and quick-release center-lock wheels gave the Southern Cross a distinctive look. The top speed of this car, in the 2-liter version, was approximately 180 km/h.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 177.
