Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 434
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Panhard & Levassor 4.1-liter 1908 Gouache on card stock 31.5 x 33 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “Seventy-five years ago, Messrs. Panhard and Levassor led a group of men who were the pioneers of the automotive industry, and they established the layout of a car’s main components as it generally remains today — although this is not the case with the current Panhard. Long before 1908, the brand’s technical supremacy had already declined, but it nevertheless continued to produce beautiful cars until the “Dynamie” was introduced in 1936. This imposing limousine, topped with a spare tire, was powered by a 4,080 cm³ engine in which each of the four cylinders was cast separately and featured a T-shaped cylinder head. The crankshaft rested on five bearings, and at its end, a multi-disc wet-clutch transmitted approximately 35 CV of power to a sector-type transmission. The rear axle, suspended by three-quarter elliptical springs, was driven by chains. Its four oil lanterns were reminiscent of the stagecoach era; the studded tires were the anti-skid tires of the time.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 39.
