Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 432
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) M.G. Midget Type J-2 1932–1933 Gouache on card stock 33 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “A power output of 36 CV at 5,500 rpm from an 850 cm³ engine is commonplace today for a passenger car, but in 1932, even many 1,500-class cars barely reached that figure; those 36 CV, fed by two carburetors and driven by an overhead camshaft, made the Midget a formidable road car thanks to its responsiveness. Derived from the Morris Minor, the first Midget (Type M) produced 20 CV and owed its popularity to its light weight, charm, liveliness, very low body, and total lack of comfort. The M.G. Midget’s character truly came into its own when it was fitted with a low-slung chassis (capable of passing under a bridge), two carburetors, and a short gearshift lever mounted far back on the transmission.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 167.
