Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 431
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Panhard & Levassor 4.8–5.5 liters, 1925–1932 Gouache on card stock 24.5 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “This Panhard is one of the few prototypes built with the aim of setting new international long-distance records. This model debuted in 1925; at the time, it was equipped with the same engine as that found in production cars—a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 4,835 ems (105 x 140 mm) and concentric sleeves. In August 1925, this car covered a distance of 185.7 km in one hour. Starting in 1926, it was equipped with a 5,516 cm engine (120 x 140 mm) of the same design and was used successfully until 1932. A Panhard of similar appearance, but with an even larger engine (8 cylinders, 8 liters), also attempted to set records from 1926 to 1934.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 111.
