Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 426
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) HRG 1.1-liter 1936 Gouache on card stock 34 x 50 cm (traces of moisture, mold, and dirt) Notes: “H. R. Godfrey collaborated with Archie Frazer-Nash on the creation of the G.N. quadricycle, followed by the first Frazer-Nash models with chain drive. It is therefore not surprising that, years later, he applied the same principles to the construction of his own car, with the exception of the chain and sprocket drive. It featured cable-operated brakes and a tubular front axle with quarter-elliptical leaf springs positioned well ahead of the engine. Originally, the car was powered by a Meadows four-cylinder engine (69 x 100 mm, 1,497 cm³) with overhead valves actuated by rocker arms, which produced about 50 CV at 4,500 rpm. Subsequent models were equipped with 1,100- and 1,500-cm³ Singer engines featuring overhead camshafts. Power was transmitted via a four-speed Moss transmission. The top speed of the Meadows-powered version was approximately 185 km/h. The PHRG’s handling and drivability were excellent for its time. The letters HRG stand for the initials of the engineers Halford, Robins, and Godfrey, who jointly designed this car. The HRG was produced until 1956 without undergoing any major changes. Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 185.
