Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 423
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1937 Alvis 4.3-liter Gouache on card stock 36 x 62 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “A grand English car, bodied by Vanden Plas. Designed by Smith-Clarke, the 4.3-liter Alvis featured independent front suspension with transverse springs and a fully synchronized transmission—at a time when most of its contemporaries still had a rigid axle and unsynchronized transmissions were still commonplace. Its 4,387 cm³ (92 x 110 mm) six-cylinder engine with rocker arms produced 140 CV and allowed it to reach the fateful 160 km/h despite its relatively high weight. The acceleration of the Alvis 4.3 was superior to that of the Mercedes 540 K and the Lagonda V12. The Alvis is the perfect example of a P.V.T., or “Post-Vintage Thoroughbred,” which can be translated as “post-vintage thoroughbred.” “Vintage” refers to a year of a good harvest or a “grand cru.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on pp. 194 & 195.
