Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 422
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Singer Le Mans 1-liter 1936–1937 Gouache on card stock 32.5 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “Cheaper than the MG Midget, the little Singer sports car was also less impressive and less durable than its rival; nevertheless, it enjoyed great popularity. Its four-cylinder engine (60 x 86 mm, 972 cm³) with an overhead camshaft unfortunately had only a two-bearing crankshaft. The suspension was conventional, with rigid axles supported by semi-elliptical leaf springs; at the rear, the low-slung chassis extended beneath the axle. In this configuration, the Le Mans reached speeds of 110 to 120 km/h, but for three times its price, it was available in a competition version. Currently, the Singer brand is part of the Rootes Group, where it has become the luxury version of the Hillman Minx.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 194.
