Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 413
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Hispano-Suiza 32cv 6.6-liter 1921 Gouache on card stock 30 x 63 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “Marc Birkigt’s six-cylinder 6.6-liter Hispano-Suiza was the star of the 1919 Paris Motor Show. Its highly advanced design and refined mechanics caused a sensation, and for more than a decade, this model was the factory’s main production line. Derived from the engines built by the company for World War I aircraft, this car’s engine was made of a lightweight alloy, with cylinder liners bolted into the block. The removable cylinder head featured a single camshaft. With a stroke and bore of 100 x 140 mm (6,597 cm³), it produced 134 CV at 2,750 rpm. Huge drum brakes on all four wheels were actuated by a powerful mechanical brake booster controlled by the transmission. This technology was quickly adopted by Rolls-Royce, which still uses it today. The transmission had no other notable features. The Hispano had a conventional chassis but stood out for its remarkable stability and the precision and lightness of its steering. A ship’s-bow-style body characterized this superb car.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on pp. 90 & 91.
