Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 411
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Crane-Simplex 46cv 1918 Gouache on card stock 33 x 49.5 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “With a wheelbase of just under 365 cm, the powerful Crane-Simplex ranked second in size, behind the large Pierce Arrow. Designed in 1914 by chief engineer Henry M. Crane, it was built with such attention to detail and care that the first owner of a Crane-Simplex was offered an unconditional lifetime warranty. However, around 1919, following an unsuccessful attempt at a financial takeover by a Wall Street syndicate, the company went out of business, long before most of the cars it had produced. The engine designed by Crane was a massive 9.9-liter six-cylinder with an L-shaped cylinder head, whose cylinders were cast in two or three blocks. Power was transmitted via a single-plate wet-sump clutch, a four-speed transmission, and a helical bevel rear axle. The foot brake actuated an externally contracting brake shoe around a drum located behind the transmission, while the handbrake operated similar brakes on the rear wheels.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 87.
