Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 410
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1928 Alfa Romeo 22/90 RLSS 3-liter Gouache on card stock 34.5 x 38.5 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “Derived from a large touring car, this Alfa Romeo does not appear to have been influenced by the racing department, which had just created the P2. The 22/90 was carefully built but lacked any original features. Its engine, a six-cylinder (75 x 110 mm) with overhead valves operated by rocker arms, was powered by two Solex carburetors. The four-speed transmission had very short gear ratios, and when the engine was at its maximum rpm, this model reached a top speed of no more than 80 km/h in third gear, which seriously undermined its sporting claims. The RLSS (Super Sport), equipped with this beautiful bow-shaped radiator featuring a double emblem, was said to reach a top speed of 135 km/h.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 127.
