Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 406
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1926 Rolls-Royce Phantom I 40/50 Gouache on card stock 31 x 49.5 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “The new Phantom, or Phantom I, succeeded the famous Ghost. The engine that propelled it silently was a six-cylinder—arranged in two groups of three—with overhead valves actuated by rocker arms. The power output of this 7.6-liter engine (108 × 140 mm), with a compression ratio not exceeding 7 to 1, was estimated at 100 CV. Despite their more powerful engine, the Phantoms had less pep than the Ghosts. The leading coachbuilders attempted, with varying degrees of success, to clad this imposing powertrain. This two-seater coupe was intended for an owner capable of doing without a chauffeur.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 125.
