Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 405
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1921 Bentley 3-Liter Gouache on card stock 36 x 60 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “The first Bentley, designed during World War I and unveiled in 1921, was this 2,996 cm³ (80 x 149 mm) four-cylinder engine with an overhead camshaft, a non-removable cylinder head, and four valves per cylinder. Over the years, power output increased from 65 CV to 86 and then 88 CV—always at 3,500 rpm—reaching 92 CV in the competition version. The thoroughly classic chassis was very robust, and the four-speed transmission was available with a wide range of gear ratios. The Bentley 3-liter made its debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1923, and although it had a solid build, the lack of front brakes cost it the victory. The following year, this flaw was corrected, and it won the famous endurance race. Just over three thousand 3-liter models were built; about fifteen of them, recognizable by their shortened wheelbase and their radiator, which was narrower at the bottom than at the top, were known as the “100 m.p.h.” models, in other words, they were guaranteed, in 1925, to reach 160 km/h.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 89.
