Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 399
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1912 Peugeot Grand Prix Gouache on card stock 32.5 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “This is the first race car equipped with a dual overhead camshaft engine featuring hemispherical combustion chambers. It was a 7.6-liter four-cylinder engine (110 × 200 mm) designed by Swiss engineer Henry in collaboration with French driver-engineers Boillot and Zuccarelli. Its maximum power output was 130 CV at 2,200 rpm. Aside from the innovation of its removable Rudge-Whitworth wheels (for Grand Prix races), the car was of orthodox design with a four-speed transmission and an exposed driveshaft. One of these cars, driven by Boillot, won the French Grand Prix at Dieppe in 1912, averaging 110.1 km/h, and, with Goux, the Indianapolis 500 the following year.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 81.
