Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 398
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1937 Mercedes-Benz “Grosser” 7.7-liter Gouache on card stock 26 x 65.5 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “The first ‘Grosser Mercedes,’ powered by a 7.7-liter inline-eight engine and designed specifically for the world’s elite, was built in 1930. Two of these cars are still in use today, in their original condition, by the Emperor of Japan. They feature a rigid rear axle suspended by semi-elliptical leaf springs. The 1937 model, produced in a small series primarily for Nazi leaders, had a tubular chassis with swing-axle suspension. Equipped on request with the traditional Daimler-Benz supercharger—driven via a clutch—it delivered 230 CV; without the supercharger, it produced 155 CV. An even larger version, equipped with a V-12 engine, was developed at the start of World War II but was never released to the market. The longest Mercedes ever built, the Model 600, now carries on the legacy of the “Grosser Mercedes.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on pp. 190 & 191.
