Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 397
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Alvis 12/50 1.5-liter 1924 Gouache on card stock 32 x 43 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “With its sleek, polished aluminum body and ducktail rear, the Alvis 12/50 remains one of Britain’s classic cars. Featuring a simple and very robust design, complemented by an excellent power-to-weight ratio, this car enjoyed numerous successes in competition for nearly a decade. The 1,496 cm engine (bore/stroke 68 x 103 mm) with a removable cylinder head featured overhead valves actuated by rocker arms. Its power output of approximately 50 CV was transmitted via a cone clutch and a four-speed transmission (later, the cone clutch was replaced by a disc clutch). When the 12/50 was launched in 1923, only the rear wheels had brakes, but it wasn’t long before the front wheels were also equipped with them. This car reached a top speed of approximately 120 km/h.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 115.
