Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 392
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1937 Jaguar S.S. 100 3.5-liter Gouache on card stock 28 x 49.5 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “The predecessor to the famous Jaguar E-Type, the S.S. 100 was a relatively inexpensive sports car given its attractive styling and performance. The six-cylinder engine was built by the Standard Motor Company exclusively for the S.S. Group. With overhead valves operated by rocker arms and a seven-bearing crankshaft, the standard production version produced 125 CV at 4,250 rpm. The 82 mm bore and a stroke of 110 mm resulted in a displacement of 3,485 cm³. The top three gears of the four-speed transmission were synchronized. It reached 96 km/h in less than 10 seconds and had a top speed of 160 km/h. It was in a car of this type that Ian Appleyard won the Rallye des Alpes in 1948. It was the first to bear the name Jaguar. Production of this model was not resumed after the war, but its engine was used in the Mark IV and later the Mark V models.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 179.
