Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 391
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1938 Bentley 4.25-liter Gouache on card stock 16.5 x 49.5 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “Derived from the very sedate Twenty (the ‘little’ Rolls, 3,669 em, 60 CV actual), the first Bentley of the new generation was introduced under the slogan ‘the silent sports car.’ Despite its 120 CV, it naturally lacked the character and virility of its predecessors, but nevertheless performed very well on the road, as its luxurious, often very heavy bodies did not overly diminish its performance. The Bentley evolved alongside the Rolls-Royce and saw its displacement increased to 4.25 liters when the Twenty—which became the 20/25 and then the 25/30—was given the designation “Wraith.” It reached 160 km/h. The latest models were equipped with an overdrive, followed by independent front suspension. This Vanden Plas sedan is a typical example of the body styles that were fitted to the 3.5- and 4.25-liter Bentleys.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 197.
