Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 389
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Voisin Aérodyne 3-liter Airplanes, 1934 Gouache on card stock 35 x 38.5 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “You either love it or you don’t. Perfectly logical without losing any of his nonconformity, Gabriel Voisin abandoned his boxy cars in 1984 in favor of streamlined bodies. The development of aerodynamic lines seems to have served as a pretext for Voisin to pursue new designs, and as different as his new cars were from previous models, the designer’s signature was evident in every detail. The Aérodyne, with a 3-liter and later a 3.3-liter valveless six-cylinder engine, stood out for its distinctive styling and the design of its sunroof, which extended all the way down to the rear bumper. Voisin then designed the Aérosport, which was one of the first “ponton-style” cars, with no visible fenders. It was available with either an inline six- or twelve-cylinder engine. The latter consisted of two six-cylinder engines placed end-to-end.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 197.
