Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 388
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Delahaye 135 MS Le Mans 3.5-liter 1938 Gouache on card stock 23.5 x 46.5 cm (traces of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “This was the year Delahaye swept the first, second, and fourth places in the overall standings at Le Mans; car No. 10 finished fourth. Since 1896, Delahaye had been synonymous with pioneering spirit, but it wasn’t until 1936 that the brand entered competition with a robust, high-performance engine. The Le Mans engine was a 3,558 cm³ (84 x 107 mm) six-cylinder with overhead valves actuated by pushrods; this version produced approximately 160 CV at 4,200 rpm. The car was equipped with either a standard transmission or a Cotal transmission. The front suspension, featuring a transverse leaf spring, was independent. Prepared for competition, this car reached speeds of over 210 km/h. It was one of the fastest production cars of its time. Successes in the Coupe des Alpes, a victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and a Monte Carlo Rally are among the achievements of the Delahaye, which also broke several endurance records.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 201.
