Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 386
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Clément Bayard 1911–1912 Gouache on card stock 29 x 35 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “The name Clément was associated with several French and English projects, and Clément Bayard produced not only a number of enormous race cars from the ‘heroic age,’ but also airships and airplanes (including Santos-Dumont’s ‘Demoiselle’). This excellent little convertible was also built by this factory. Its 8 CV, four-cylinder, 1,358 cm³ (60 x 120 mm) monoblock engine with side valves was lubricated by splash lubrication, fueled by a Solex carburetor, and equipped with a Bosch magneto. With its hood shaped like an upside-down bathtub and its radiator positioned between the engine and the cockpit, it resembled a Renault. A cone clutch, a separate three-speed transmission, and a rear axle with a bevel gear set characterized its drivetrain. The front springs were semi-elliptical, but the rear suspension consisted of only a transverse leaf spring, as on the Ford Model T. The parking brake acted on the transmission, while the foot brake acted on the internally expanding segments of the rear drum brakes. Lighting was provided by acetylene headlights and oil-filled side lanterns.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 35.
