Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 385
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Berliet 1910–1911 Gouache on card stock 25 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: Today, Berliet is entirely dedicated to the production of massive trucks; in the past, it manufactured automobiles, a few examples of which are preserved in the museum at its factory in Lyon. In 1910, Berliet offered a choice of seven models with two-, four-, and six-cylinder engines. This car, which retained the graceful lines of the Victoria models and was one of the first—if not the very first—cars used by the Office of the President of the Republic, was powered by a 2.4-liter (80 × 120 mm) four-cylinder side-valve engine. Its drivetrain included a four-speed column-shift transmission and a multi-plate clutch. The chassis was lowered at the rear. Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 55.
