Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 384
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Excelsior Type Albert I, 1927 Gouache on card stock 21 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “This city convertible was built by Van den Plas on the excellent Belgian Excelsior 30/100 CV chassis. This rare vehicle, a direct rival to the Minerva, was equipped with a 5.4-liter (90 x 140 mm) six-cylinder engine with an overhead camshaft; with a single carburetor, this engine produced 115 CV; in the sport version with a short chassis and three carburetors, power reached 130 CV and the top speed was 145 km/h. Power was transmitted via a dry multi-plate clutch and a three-speed transmission (four-speed on later models). Around 1928, Excelsior came under the control of Imperia; later, both brands were acquired by Minerva.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 113.
