Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 383
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Maybach Zeppelin 60/200, 1936 Gouache on card stock 30 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “This large twelve-cylinder car was truly a luxury vehicle. It was named after the famous airship manufacturer because Maybach had initially produced aircraft engines. The cylinder block, forming a 60-degree open V, was made of aluminum cast in a single piece with the upper part of the crankcase. The cast-iron cylinder head featured overhead valves actuated by rocker arms. Two carburetors provided the fuel supply; the engine had a dual ignition system; and the crankshaft, supported by seven bearings, was equipped with a vibration damper. The displacement was 7,977 ems, and the power output was 200 CV. at 2,800 rpm. The drivetrain included a single-plate clutch and a three-speed transmission—unusual in that it was supplemented by two final-drive ratios controlled by vacuum via two small levers mounted on the steering column. The Maybach thus had six forward gears and two reverse gears. The driveshaft was housed within a thrust tube. This enormous vehicle, with a wheelbase of 365 cm, reached a top speed of 160 km/h. Several Maybach chassis fitted with special, highly streamlined bodies were presented at the Berlin and Paris Auto Shows.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 189.
