Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 380
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Gouache on card stock 17.5 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “Designers in the 1930s had greater creative freedom than they do today, notably having the ability to experiment with headlights and separate fenders. However, the angular severity of the Rolls-Royce’s front end sometimes clashed with the sweeping lines of the body, as seen on this Super Marine. The Phantom II had more power than the Ghost and Phantom I, and the cantilever springs in the rear suspension of the latter two had been replaced by semi-elliptical springs and leaf springs running beneath the axle. The transmission and clutch were integrated with the engine. The fastest Rolls-Royce of the era was the Continental, which reached 145 km/h.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 165.
