Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 379
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Simplex 50cv 1911 Gouache on card stock 17.5 x 33 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “The Simplex, manufactured in the United States but said to have borrowed certain technical details from Mercedes, was a large, luxurious, and expensive car for aristocrats and the nouveau riche. Built by Smith & Mabley of New York—formerly Mercedes importers—it was equipped with a 9.8-liter four-cylinder engine (bore and stroke: 146 mm) with a T-head cylinder head, which produced 70 CV. The transmission was chain-driven. A later version was upgraded to 90 CV by increasing the bore to 155 mm. The Simplex race cars enjoyed a fairly successful career in American racing.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 57.
