Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 377
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Bugatti Type 35 1924–1930 Gouache on card stock 33 x 49.5 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “Ettore Bugatti’s greatest success in racing cars was the Type 35, which won countless competitions, including several Grand Prix races. It appeared in various versions, with 1.5-liter, 2-liter, and 2.3-liter engines, sometimes supercharged. The first was a 2-liter (60 x 88 mm) non-supercharged version, derived from the very mediocre Type 30; the best was probably the 2.3-liter 35 B (60 x 100 mm) with a supercharger, which raced for the first time in 1927. In each version, its inline eight-cylinder engine with a fixed cylinder head had a single overhead camshaft controlling three valves per cylinder (one intake, two exhaust). The five-bearing crankshaft was “mounted” on bearings, except in the Type 35 A. The Roots-type supercharger, positioned very low on the right side of the engine, was driven by gears at the front of the crankshaft. Exceptional balance and handling for the time, combined with highly reliable mechanics, explain the success of this car, whose power output was no greater than that of most of its competitors. The multi-disc wet-sump clutch, mechanical brakes, quarter-elliptical rear springs, and exposed driveshaft remained true to Bugatti tradition. The rear axle was supported by a long central push rod and two short tubular struts positioned on either side of the body. The light-alloy wheels contributed significantly to the aesthetics of this magnificent car. The Type 35 was replaced by the Type 51 with twin overhead camshafts.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 109.
