Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 375
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1901 Mercedes 35cv Gouache on card stock 32 x 46.5 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “The first Mercedes dates back to 1900. After the death of Gottlieb Daimler, his chief engineer, Wilhelm Maybach, improved the enormous 5-liter Cannstatt-Daimler engine producing 24 CV, which had been designed by Paul Daimler, Gottlieb’s son. He increased the displacement to 5.3 liters and the power to 35 CV at 1,000 rpm, and named his creation “Mercedes,” after the daughter of the Austro-Hungarian consul in Nice. The 35 CV Mercedes caused a sensation at the “Semaine du Moteur” in Nice in March 1901. A true forerunner of the modern automobile, it was the first to combine these key features: a steel chassis, four cylinders cast in pairs, mechanically operated valves, a four-speed transmission with a grid selector, two carburetors with jets, internally expanding shoe brakes, and a honeycomb radiator. The birth of the Mercedes marked the end of the era of “horseless carriages” and ushered in the age of the automobile.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 33.
