Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 373
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Riley M.P.H. 1934 Gouache on card stock 23.5 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “Despite its sporty appearance, the M.P.H. had a career as brief as it was lackluster. As is sometimes the case with movie stars, this car is remembered more for its bodywork than for its performance. Its excessive weight proved to be an insurmountable handicap. A production derivative of the 1.5-liter six-cylinder Riley race car that competed successfully in 1933—and whose engine design inspired the unforgettable E.R.A.—the M.P.H. was available in 1,458, 1,666, and 1,726 cm³. In all three cases, the stroke was identical at 95.2 mm, and the bore ranged from 57 to 60.3 to 62 mm, respectively. The smallest version produced 70 CV. and its top speed was 137 km/h. Like all Rileys—from the Nine to those of the 1950s—the M.P.H.’s engine had two camshafts positioned very high up, which, via short pushrods and rocker arms, opposite overhead valves in a hemispherical combustion chamber. The crankshaft was supported by only three bearings. It was equipped, as an option, with either a standard close-ratio transmission with 8th and 4th gears in constant mesh, or a Wilson automatic transmission. The chassis side members ran beneath the rear axle, and the brakes—narrow drums of enormous diameter—were cable-operated.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 171.
