Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 372
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1930 Austin Seven Ulster “Tourist Trophy” Gouache on cardstock 28 x 49.5 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “The Austin Seven was racing as soon as it could walk, as competition versions appeared the very year it was born, in 1922. The Sevens took the lion’s share of racing victories until the arrival of the MG Midget. The production Ulster model was derived from the factory car that achieved glory at the Ulster Tourist Trophy. The notable differences from the standard model were as follows: a lowered front axle, a 746 cm³ side-valve engine crankshaft (56 × 76 mm) with forced lubrication, modified valve timing, a special exhaust manifold, and, as an option, a Cozette supercharger. Thus equipped, the Seven Ulster produced 33 CV at approximately 5,000 t/min, and its top speed exceeded 130 km/h. It was also equipped with a superb three-speed close-ratio transmission. From the standard Austin Seven, it retained the leaf springs—transverse at the front and quarter-elliptical at the rear—the driveshaft housed within a pushrod tube, and the cable-operated brakes. The standard Austin Seven was manufactured under license in Germany by BMW and in France by Rosengart.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 149.
