Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 370
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Frazer-Nash 1934 Gouache on card stock 43 x 33 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “A tubular front axle supported by quarter-elliptical leaf springs with struts, an engine that could be an Anzani, Meadows, Blackburn, or Cough, and a one-of-a-kind drivetrain featuring chains and toothed sprockets with dog clutches—these were the hallmarks of the Frazer-Nash. Without a differential and with its rear wheels rigidly coupled, it turned “side-by-side” and offered considerable resistance in tight turns taken at low speeds on a good road surface. The Frazer-Nash with chain drive had a very favorable power-to-weight ratio; it was robust and durable, although the finish left something to be desired in certain details. During the 1920s and 1930s, Frazer-Nash cars achieved remarkable results in track and road races. Its manufacturers, the Aldington brothers, adopted the BMW as an additional model in 1935; although demand for the BMW (later known in England as the Frazer-Nash-BMW) exceeded that for the chain-driven cars, the latter continued to be built until 1939.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 169.
