Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 361
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1934 Bugatti Type 57 3.3-liter Gouache on card stock 31 x 49.5 cm (traces of moisture, mold, and dirt) Notes: “The Type 57 was met with some skepticism by the brand’s die-hard fans, who criticized it for being too ‘civilized.’ It was undeniably more comfortable and easier to handle than its predecessors, but its power and top speed of 150 km/h were, in 1934, quite respectable, even for a 3.3-liter, eight-cylinder engine with two overhead camshafts producing 130 CV. The chassis, which was very rigid, was 100 percent Bugatti with its tubular front axle and rear suspension featuring inverted semi-cantilever arms, but the transmission—synchronized in the higher gears—was integrated with the engine. Over the years, the Type 57 evolved further; it was equipped with hydraulic brakes, hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers, and an engine mounted on rubber mounts. Bugatti offered some consolation to its critics with the high-performance versions of the 57—with or without a supercharger—which remain among the most prestigious sports cars of all time.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 173.
