Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 360
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Panhard & Levassor 1934 Gouache on card stock 33 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “In 1934, Panhard launched the “Panoramic” series, named for the special design of its windshield. To ensure full visibility, the usual A-pillars had been replaced by two small curved panes, which, in fact, caused distortions. With its long fenders extending down to the bumper, low-set headlights, and highly distinctive overall design, the Panhard Panoramic was certainly stylish, but its performance was mediocre. The Knight-type valveless six-cylinder engine, available in various displacements, was particularly notable for its quiet operation. Another feature added to the car’s originality: its swing-arm front axle, a solution that Panhard presented as superior to both the rigid axle and independent wheels. Instead of being attached to the side members in the usual way, the front springs were mounted on a tube, hinged in the middle of the chassis, serving as both the front crossmember and the spring mounts. That same year, Panhard unveiled a car coated in fluorescent paint that made it visible at night; it was a short-lived publicity stunt.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 173.
