Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 359
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Duesenberg J 1928 Gouache on card stock 31 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: "Created in 1928 at the instigation of E.-L. Cord, but designed by the Duesenberg brothers who had sold their business to him, the Duesenberg 'J' model broke with conventional American engineering: it was a 6,880 cm inline-eight (95.2 × 120.6 mm), but with two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. The crankshaft was equipped with a mercury-bath vibration damper, and the chassis was automatically lubricated every 130 km. Power output was rated at 265 CV at 4,200 t/min, and the top speed of this vehicle, weighing well over 2 metric tons, exceeded 160 km/h. This faux-cabriolet was designed by Letourneur and Marchand.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 135.
